Consul Elias says there is no
revolution
Ridicules the Idea of General Uprising
and Says Most of Marauders Have Been Captured-Yaquis Hemmed In.
In view of the serious
character of the so-called revolution in Mexico during the past
couple of weeks, according to the accounts sent out from the affected
area, the light in which the entire affair is viewed by the
government of Mexico is interesting. The officials of the southern
republic ridicules the idea of the troubles being a revolution but
claim that the reports published throughout the United States have
been laughable and ridiculous.
Arturo M. Elias, Mexican
Consul in this city, was seen last evening by a Star representative
in regard to the matter, and in reply to questions said:
There has not been any
revolution in Mexico, and the accounts published throughout the
United States have been grossly exaggerated. The late disturbances
were nothing but the activities of a gang of bandits, which,
according to the best ac-counts, was organized on the American side
of the Rio Grande at Del Rio.
"These mean crossed
the line to Mexico, attacked the towns of Las Vacas, which is only a
small settlement, and not only committed robbery and arson but also
murder after which some of them succeeded in getting back to the
United States. Most of those who stayed in Mexico have already been
captured by the rurales, and will be dealt with according to law on
charges of robbery and murder, and not on any charge of inciting or
carrying on a rebellion. The Mexican government has already applied
for the extradition of those members of the gang who succeeded in
recrossing the international boundary line, and at the proper time
will be able to show that these men are extraditable under the clause
of the treaty which refers to murder, highway robbery and others of
that character.
