Advance on Ensenada set for tonight
Harmony has been restored at Mexicali.
Los Angeles Junta Sends Reinforcements.
Mexicali, march 9. Fully
equipped except as to rifles, 107 Mexicans sent down by the
revolutionary junta at Los Angeles, joined the insurrectos today. The
Americans, who consisted largely of members of the I. W. W., have all
been elimated from the rebel force. Generals Leyva and Simon
Berthold, fully restored to power, today announced their intention of
marching upon Ensenada at once, and they plan to leave tomorrow
night.
When Berthold was shown a
dispatch saying that 400 federals with artillery were at Ensenada, he
said that would make no difference, and added: “We will march on
Ensenada, and the Associated Press correspondent is welcome to
accompany us and report that battle that will surely take place
between here and the capital of the peninsula province”.
Berthold said that the
town of Tecate had been captured by Captain Salinas and his force,
and that this would mean a large accession to the rebel’s ranks.
“We will march to Ensenada with at least 300 men,” he said.
Stanley is on the
American side and indicates that he is waiting the proper time for
rejoining the insurgent force to resume the position which was
wrested from him by the coup d'etat carried out by Leyva and Berthold
last Saturday.
John K. Turner, the
writer, disregarded the order of Captain Babcock of the United States
cavalry not to cross the line, and attended a harmony meeting of the
insurrectos last night. He is supposed to be at Holtville with
Stanley now. Berthold and Leyva appear very confident since the
discordant element has been eliminated and both are preparing to lead
the forces against Ensenada.
