Trepidation of Mexicali

An Attack by Federals Expected Today

Guides broke through

Sent to Show Col. Mayol the Way to the Insurrecto Stronghold Report That Generals Leyva and Berthold Are Surrounded.
Mexicali, march 18. Ten men destined to act as guides for Colonel Mayol commanding the Eighth battalion of the Mexican army, successfully ran the gauntlet of Captain William Stanley's sixty insurrectos at Packard last night. Amid a fusilade the men galloped unharmed to the mountains.
It is understood that the guides sent by the Mexican government to assist Mayol in the campaign against Mexicali. As a result of the incident the small force here is in consternation. It is now believed certain that Mayol will strike at Mexicali tomorrow.
There are rumors here to the effect that Berthold and Leyva are already beleagueed by the victorious federals from Tecate in Trinidad valley, seventy five miles southwest, but the fact is that most of the rebels still hovering about Encine, Fulme and Picacho pass.
Two burros were the cause of an exciting period last night. They were grazing peacefully in the moonlight among the mesquite brush. A few insurrectos who observed them became excited and opened fire. The bullets whistled above the heads of the reporters and American sentreis fully 180 yards north of the boundary. No one was hurt, not even the burros. The shooting ceased only when Lieutenant Bracken sent word to the provost guard at Mexicali that if the rebels fired again the United States soldiers would return the fire.
