Marshalls are ready to move
Force of Deputies Are Held in Federal
Building Ready to Respond to Call From Border.
Much uneasiness is felt
in the office of the United States Marshal relative to the outbreak
along the border. Until a late hour last night Marshal Nolte and his
force of deputies remained at the office in the Federal Building
awaiting communications from both Washington and points along the
border.
"With reference to
the situation along the border," said Marshal Nolte, "I can
say nothing at present. I believe the condition to be serious in
places, but unless my deputies along the line are not able to cope
with the situation I shall remain here.
"Of course the
neutrality laws will be observed, and it is up to the Marshal's
office to see that they are. Howewer, I think the deputies in that
part of the district are able (o handle the affair unless conditions
take a more serious tum."
At department
headquarters, Fort Sam Houston, no action has been taken. Though the
military authorities have been kept advised of the situation in
general, it is not thought that troops will be needed.
