Desultory reports from seat of war
Accounts of more or less harmless
skirmishes
The Conflict Consists of Burning and
Repairing Bridges.
Mexico City, march 5. A
night train over the Mexican railway from Veracruz for Mexico City
was fired on by rebel’s yesterday morning between Humatila and Alta
Luz. The rebels were lying in wait to stop the train. When they
signaled to stop the engineer crowded steam and ran the gauntlet of
the insurrectos' fire. No one was injured. An escort of troops has
been ordered to acompany trains on that line in future.
Gen. Luque Ojinija, it is
reported, was kept busy by a force of 500 men commanded by Sanchez,
who is operating in El Mulato. Frequent rallies were made recently by
the rebels and many skirmishes occurred but the insurgents fear to
attack Luque's camp because of the machine guns he has.
An expedition carrying
food and ammunition is said to be enroute for the relief of
Chihuahua. A military train is also reported to have left Chihuahua
to relieve Col. Cuellar who has not been able to reach his
destination, Casas Grandes, owing to the destruction of bridges.
Cuellar, it is reported, is encamped at Sabilal station. Captain Cota
reported to federal authorities that with ninety men he defeated 125
rebels near Alamos, capturing the leader, Albert Loya, who is
wounded.
The American consulate,
Torreon, reported that a letter from Topia, Durango stated that
several rebels were killed last Saturday night in an attack on that
town.
